september mind explosion

I am just going to list the things we've been up to over the last month.
They are in no particular order, but I think my mind will explode unless I get it all out:

-Wade's grant proposal due to the NIH (This Saturday or whenever the government decides to reopen).
-Cristi working on graduate school papers/quizzes/reading/projects. I'm almost done with my first class and so far, I still have an A!  I'm really enjoying it.
-Peter's first mountain biking experience.
-Cristi gets certification to teach in AZ.
-Jack and Ben are both sent to the principals office. :(
-Cristi re-evaluates her parenting choices and determines that she has a lot to learn/perfect.
-Wade's grant proposal.
-Cristi going back to the gym, getting into a routine, training for a half-marathon, trying to lose the stress weight from the last 2 years (I'm down 4lbs, I'll take it!).
-Church camping trip including: zip-lining, "sleeping" in a cabin, hiking, exploring, apple-picking, football, walkie-talkies, exercise/dancing, Ben's own interpretation of exercise/dancing, playing with friends, and lots of hot cocoa.  I wish I'd taken more pictures and written down some of the funny things my boys did/said. They had a blast, of course.
-Working on Wade's grant proposal.
-A night out to see Spirit Family Reunion, a bluegrass band, play in Tempe, AZ.  Missing Nashville.
-Cristi subbing at the boys school sometimes a couple times a week, as needed.
-More working on Wade's grant proposal.
-Starting soccer practices and the first game!  The boys are all enjoying it as usual.
-Cristi volunteering each week in Jack and Ben's classes.
-Yard work, yard work, yard work (of course).
-Hunting and destroying scorpions (inside and outside of the house).
-Wade's grant proposal may be the death of him.
-School fundraiser selling cookie dough (it's over and grandparents to the rescue on that one!).
-Wade is stressed out over his work because of a, what do you know, grant proposal!
-Counting down until the grant proposal is done and turned in!
-The weather in Arizona is starting to cool down (think 90's during the day, 60's during the night)= more bike rides, hikes, running outside.  Yay!

Enjoy some pictures from the camping trip:

of crawdads and mud castles

While visiting family in Nevada, we also went up to Tahoe where my step-sister/bestie Nancy met us for the day. Since they moved to Sacramento for a 1-year internship, she's only a few hours away from Tahoe which made it a perfect meet up spot.  And boy is it just as beautiful as I remember!  If you ever get the chance to visit Lake Tahoe, it is well worth your time. Brad and Tirza with their 3 boys, plus Nancy's 4 boys, and my 3 = 10 boys (zero girls) playing in the lake, catching crawdads, building sand castles, and just having the time of their lives, while mommies mostly sat and caught up on life.

Andrew, Pete, and Josh in their crawdad fortress.
Nancy and I with her youngest, Jacob.  I was sure to get plenty of cuddle time!
BBQ Pit after a long day at the beach= my boys literally falling asleep at the table!  Of course, they wouldn't sleep in the car on the way home.

home still means nevada

During Wade's "Mancation," I drove the boys to visit my mom and Carl in good 'ol Fallon, NV (wished I'd taken some photos with my mom). While there, we also got to visit with my brother Brad and his wife Tirza and boys in Reno.  They have three boys (Owen, Chase, Trevor) and all of ours had a blast together.  We were also lucky enough to help celebrate Trevor and Chase's birthday's with them while some of Tirza's family was in town too.  Fun!

Pete helping Trevor decorate his birthday cake.  Trevor turned 1!

Presents!  Chase turned 3 and he shares his birthday with his little brother Trevor, 2 years apart.

Sprinklers.

Ready, set, GO!

Pete and cousin Owen dancing?  Martial Arts? Shooting bows?  Not really sure.

Me and nephew Trevor.
We got to see my grandmother, Billie Jean and enjoyed visiting with her for a bit. She is 86 years old!  From her and my grandfather, she has 5 children, and many, many grand-children and great-grand children.
With Great-grandma Beach and her favorite doll.  She told me that her mother, Gladys (we call her Nonnie) made it for her, right down to the hand-knitted booties!  What a special keepsake.
Group "Selfie"

Ben's first "Selfie"
Jack's first "selfie"
Did I mention that I hate the word "selfie?"  I hate typing it and I hate saying it.  Isn't there some other word we can use to describe a self-photo taken by yourself that implies holding the camera out in front of you with your arm extended?  Hmm, I'll think about that one.

mount timpanogos

Remember the last time we hiked Timp?  Yeah, I still brag about how I hiked Timp while pregnant with twins.  And I still don't recommend it.  This time I was not pregnant, but also not in as good of shape as I was before.  We had driven in from Arizona the night before and Wade and I both started to feel a little sick at about mile 7-8. When it got worse as we got higher, we decided not to risk altitude sickness and turned around at mile 8.  But hey, 16 miles isn't too bad for a morning hike.

View of the summit.

We're only about 7 miles in here, we went about 1 more and then turned around.
Famous last words?

Break before heading back down the trail.

in which I ramble about our house guests, lament our lack of photos, and flashback to 2009

Wade's parents, sister and her family came for Thanksgiving, which, if I may say, was a HUGE success.  The food turned out great and I wasn't overly stressed out about it since I had planned ahead and prepared many things during the days leading up to the big dinner. It was great to have family around and get to see Amy, Bob and the cousins Katie, Colby, and Trevor.  Pete absolutely adores Trevor (maybe because he's 12 and so way too cool), and he spent most of the weekend trying to be near and like him.  We also had Wade's parents and the children loved to be spoiled by love and dollar store toys from Grandma and Grandpa!

The week after Thanksgiving, my mom came to visit and helped me get some projects done around the house (ie: painting furniture, which turned out great!).  It was fun to hang out with her and have someone to scratch my back, paint toenails with, and go out for sushi & massage/facials!  None of these are regular things around the Van Horn household. :)

Next up, Christmas, which I'm almost ready for (a little more sewing left and a couple of family gifts to be bought and sent).  We'll have my Dad, and two of my brothers Todd and Brent for Christmas with us so that will be more fun and more house guests!

Also, we lost our camera for a while (just found it a few days ago) and our other fancy cameras are old and on the fritz.  Time for a new fancy one, but it's just not in the budget right now.  Anyway, I don't blog when I don't have photos to post, so thus the lack of updates.

For now, some old photos of Jack and Ben with their awesome hair will have to suffice.  I miss their blond curls!  These photos were taken in November of 2009, three years ago in Nashville.  They also make me miss the Nashville Fall!

negative me (or) what makes you happy?

Ugh, I am slowly realizing that I have a bad attitude.  I don't know why I am so negative in my life right now, but I apologize.  The previous post about school photos is just one in a long line of negative thoughts in my head recently.  I really do love photos of my kids, no matter how overpriced or bad they are!  My boys are pretty amazing.  Since it is November now (and in an attempt to shake this negative attitude), I think I will share some things that make me happy.  Whenever I am saying prayers with the boys at night, I ask them what they want to say in their prayer beforehand.  I ask what they are thankful for from Heavenly Father and I usually word it, "What makes you happy?" They seem to understand that better than just "what are you thankful for?"  Although, I do like to associate that wording with it as well so that they will learn to be thankful/grateful.  Anyway, recently one night Jack's list of things that make him happy included: Mom, friends, and a couple of other random things that I can't remember.  They weren't the things that I would have said, and that's what makes it so great!

Here is my list right now (not in any particular order):

1- My home:  It feels more like a burden at the moment to try and figure out how to make it look nice and feel cozy and comfortable, but I keep forgetting how very lucky I am.  We have spent the last 12 years living in apartments and rental houses, usually complaining about space, yard for the kids, mold, cinder block, etc. We recently purchased our first home and it is absolutely beautiful.  I like to think of it as our mansion.  To many it would not be large enough or nice enough or have fancy enough furnishings to be considered a mansion, but to us it is huge (by far the largest place we have ever lived), beautiful (seriously- granite and hard wood, and plantation shutters- shut up!), and we are blessed to have the furnishings we have, even if they've been with us through 12 years of marriage/school/kids.  I can't believe this is our home and I truly want to make it a special place for our family, not just as far as the "stuff" goes, but I'd like to make it a place of love and kind words, happiness and safety for our children.  I'm still working on that part. :/

2- My kids:  I am very blessed to have three children.  I know it's not always a given and for us it has been an adventure. Three boys who are rambunctious and energetic, busy and curious, love to play games, watch movies, eat, run, ride bikes, sing, dance, and make messes.  They also love to read stories, draw, and write.  Each has his own talents and little things that make me smile.  I told Ben as I cuddled him in bed last night how special he is (Jack and Pete had already fallen asleep).  I love telling them how special they are.  I usually say to each, "You are my best Jack."  "You are my best Ben." "You are my best Peter."  I want them each to feel like they are my favorite.  If ALL of them can grow up and look back on their childhood and say "I was mom's favorite!", that would make me happy.  Another thing I need to work on.

3- Wade:  Needless to say, he's a pretty great guy.  He's one of those people who is naturally talented at everything he does. Not only did he show an aptitude for science early, taking college courses in High School, then studying Biochemistry and Chemistry in college.  He then decided to go on to get a PhD in Chemistry and then a Post-Doc all the while working his butt off at part-time jobs as an undergrad and teaching/TA-ing in graduate school (not to mention having a wife and kids to provide for as well). Not only is he incredibly book smart and street smart (which I am writing here to mean: intuitively wise.  He always knows what to do and is level headed and keeps his cool), he is also a talented athlete. Soccer was a big part of his life and he played in college, but he also excels at pretty much any other sport he plays.  You wouldn't know it to look at him since he's not a tall athletic build, but he routinely shocks people who consider themselves talented athletes when we destroys them at volleyball, tennis, racquetball (that would be me), etc. Sometimes it can be frustrating for someone like me who is such a failure at most things (but keeping positive :), but mostly I just feel really lucky to have him.  I certainly don't think I'm in his league and I'm grateful for him.

So, I have written too much about Wade already, but the most important part about what I think is so great about him, is his patience with me.  His dedication to our family.  The amazing father that he is to our boys.  I feel like a lost soul with no direction most of the time when it comes to marriage and parenthood.  I didn't exactly learn the appropriate ways to do these things.  But somehow, he seems to know what is best and he can do it.  I feel like with him, I can't fail (although sometimes it seems like I'm trying so very hard to do so).  Over and over again, he puts up with my 'blonde' moments, which are frequent.  Already in less than 6 months, I've locked myself out of the house, out of the car, forgotten to pick up my kids from school for early release (twice!), and had countless other "Cristi" moments.  I think that maybe I can just plan better or work harder, but alas, I have my moments no matter what I do. He is the best father I can imagine.  He loves to play soccer (or other sports/games) with the boys, he puts them to bed with tickling and back-riding and he disciplines them with love and kindness.  I want to be like him someday.

4- Schooling/Job/Income-  These all seem to be wrapped up into one.  I am grateful that I had the opportunity to go to college.  In large part it was thanks to parents, organizations that gave scholarships and friends who set the example to go.  No one else in my immediate family had ever received a college degree, so it wasn't something inherently valued in my family.  But I did it and I loved it. It changed me and I look back on those years as more than just intellectual growth, but personal, spiritual, social growth.  I am so glad that I could study to become a teacher and then had the chance to teach for a while. It seems odd now:  My kids are all in school and I have come full circle from when I was a newlywed with no kids, teaching 4th grade.  Then one day, I was a mom with a brand new baby boy, leaving my job to stay with him and teach just one child.  Then that one became three and there were many years of babies and poop and no sleep and frustration, and love and cuddling and singing to sleep and rocking.  It's not a lot different now, just that they go away for a big part of the day and I feel this new feeling like I can do something more outside my home and away from my kids.  Something that I went to college to do and trained and loved and did for those years before they came.   I am looking forward to finding my fit in this new-to-me world right now.

Wade's schooling/job/income that provide for us also make me happy.  It has been a long road mixed with my education and job and then the arrival of our children and growth of our family, but now, somehow, 10 years after he first said, "I think I'd like to go to grad school," now he is starting his career as a professor.  He has worked very hard and will have to continue to do so.  He has given up a lot of things that he would probably like to do.  He also loves his job and puts a lot into it because he loves it and wants to succeed.  I am very proud of him in his success so far and I know that he will do well in the future.  He has been a dedicated Student, Scientist, Researcher, Chemist, Provider for our family.  I really don't know anyone who works harder (or smarter) than him.

I can't think of anything else right now.  Too much positive thinking for my negative brain right now ;).

i went in

Have you ever thought about what you would do if your child was in trouble? Maybe I'm crazy, but I day dream about how I'd save my children if they needed help. Particularly, how I'd hunt down and save them if they were kidnapped, or how I'd jump into the water and save them if they were drowning. It's weird I guess.

Today Peter, Jack, and Ben all had their first swimming lesson together at the YMCA. Well, Peter has had swimming lessons before, but it was a first for Jack and Ben. I arrived late and introduced the boys to the teachers who were already in a full swing swimming lesson with the other 8 children that had arrived on time.

Since Pete has been before, I know the drill at the YMCA swimming lessons. There were 2 teachers for the 11 students. The teachers have all the kids sit on the ledge of the pool with their feet in the water. Then they each take the kids one by one and "swim" with them by holding them under the arms. Today, the kids were supposed to kick their legs swimming on their front and then their back in turn.

After one of Ben's "turns" his teacher set him back on the step of the pool so that he could climb up and sit on the ledge to wait his turn again. Then the teacher turned to face the rest of the children sitting on the ledge waiting. He did not see that Ben didn't go up the steps, but somehow went down. I don't know if he lost his balance in the water (it was about a foot deep at the shallowest step) or if he was trying to go down to the lower step, but in any case, he was now past all the steps and completely underwater unable to swim or touch the bottom. No big deal. I was watching the whole time and saw that the teacher was within arms reach of Ben. I was alarmed, but watched, waiting for the teacher to see him and grab him up. 1, 2, 3 seconds past and the teacher was still not aware that one of his students was underwater. He was talking to the group on the ledge. Ben was just off to the left and slightly behind the teacher. I stood up and started closing the 20-30 yards between where I sat and the area where they were in the pool. At the same time that I began moving, other parents started shouting at the teacher, trying to get his attention. 4, 5, 6 seconds past and I am standing on the ledge by the class looking down at the teacher and my underwater Ben an arms length from him. He looks up at me and another YMCA worker who are standing there. He still doesn't know what is going on. The indoor pool echoes and it is difficult to hear anything, even when you are inches from the person you are speaking to. 7, 8 seconds and I am there, as close as I can get to Ben without actually going into the water, waiting for the teacher to understand why we are all standing so near and shouting. As I was standing there looking at him and watching my child, I made a decision without thinking at all. I went in to the water, picked up my son, and pulled him out of the pool. I gave him a hug and held him for a while.

Ben was perfectly fine. He hadn't sucked in any water, and was not visibly frightened. In fact, he only let me hold him for about 30 seconds and then signaled that he wanted to go back to the swimming lesson. He would not have drowned in 10 seconds under water, but my instincts took over and I over-reacted. I was left standing against the wall, water up to my thighs dripping down from my jeans into my shoes. I felt like an idiot. Why didn't I just yell at the teacher again to reach out and grab Ben? Why did I go in the water?

I stood there for another 10 minutes until the lesson was over, then I took the boys into the locker room to get them all dressed. The YMCA worker who witnessed it all offered me some lifeguard shorts to change in to. I put them on and then covered up with a towel. We four walked outside into the 21 degree night and moved quickly to the car.

The fact is that Ben would not have drowned. The teacher would have seen him and picked him up. He was not really in any danger. Under the circumstances, I acted a little crazy, but if I had it to do all over again, I'd do the exact same thing. I would jump off a waterfall into a raging river to save my boys. I'd also offer up my pride and go fully clothed into the YMCA swimming pool.

update, 9/10/09

Peter is an excellent prayer giver. He said his best prayer yet at dinner time recently: "...please bless that mommy doesn't make this dinner ever again...." (Note taken, no French Dip!)

He also drew a picture of our family at school. It included all the regular people, ie: mom, dad, peter, peter, jack, and ben. When I asked him why he drew himself twice, he showed me which one was him and which one was Big Peter, "You know, L's daddy." So, apparently, Big Peter is now an honorary member of our family. Welcome to our family! You are on dish duty tomorrow (don't forget).

In other news, I had a super sanitation experience. I forgot to take our garbage can out to the curb last week and today is garbage day again. I left the house with the boys for a morning of fun at the park and then to a luncheon (yeah it's a rough job, but somebody's gotta do it). At about noon I realized I had forgotten to take the can to the curb AGAIN. I couldn't let three weeks of trash pile up, so I drove as quickly as I could safely and legally go, obeying all the traffic laws etc. of course and arrived at home as the sanitation collection truck (pc enough?) was two homes away from mine, literally just in the nick of time! Boo-yah- they even helped me carry the second can to the curb as I was just getting it out when they arrived in front of the house. Made my day! And yes I am aware that I just said sanitation collection made my day. It did.

fallon, nv, july 11-18, 2009

While Wade was on his mancation in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, I took the boys to my home town of Fallon, NV and stayed with my mom and Carl. I was met by my sister Corrine and her girls, brothers Todd and Brad with his wife and son, and my dad. It was great to see everyone and enjoy the dry, hot summer that is northern Nevada.

All the cousins together (cousin #7, Chase was the born just days later)

Ben, Owen, Jack

At the lake, Uncle Todd was the favorite water pal.

Jack at the lake.

Pete and cousin Brielle swimming with my dad, Grandpa Danny.

Ben at the lake.

The boys could have played for hours, in fact they did! We had so much fun, thanks for letting us stay with you Grandma Leslie and Grandpa Carl. And thanks for coming to meet us Grandpa Danny, Uncle Todd, Aunt Corrine and girls!

july 24-25, 2009

My sister and I ran the Deseret News 10k together and I beat my previous time by nearly 7 minutes! I was #946 out of the total 2264 runners, not bad! My official time was 53:04.1 running at an average 8:33/M.

We spent the day at This is the Place State Park with my sisters Corrine and girls, and Nancy and her family. Nancy's boy Andrew and Peter are best buddies and seemed to be happy to get to see each other again.

We pinicked with Wade's parents and Grandpa Robbins.

highly contagious and a 10k in SLC

We'll be spending the next week under quarantine at home. Jack and Ben both caught HFMD, so, no YMCA, no playdates, no volleyball, no nothin'! We will be getting creative and probably spending lots of time outside. Luckily, I think the worst is over for the boys and it was very mild, so we'll have plenty of fun, just without any friends to spread the virus to!

On a completely different note, I've decided that I want to run the Deseret Morning News 10k in Salt Lake City on July 24th. If there is anyone who will be in the area and would like to run with me I'm officially challenging YOU to do it! This is the training schedule I'll be using for the next 7 weeks (starting with week two). I know there's gotta be some of you who enjoy running, aren't expecting a baby, and will be in the area on that date. If you're interested, please let me know and you can register on active.com by 6pm on July 20.

farewell friends

We're gonna miss you.

We'll miss Destry and Brooklyn too, but for some reason didn't get a photo with all of their family!
